Why Sunday Sydney moves cost double — even when the building allows them

Updated 5 June 20268 min readSydney

A Surry Hills customer once told me she'd "saved a Saturday" by moving on a Sunday. The settlement quote was $1,400. Her actual bill, after the lift bond, the building manager's call-out fee and the Sunday rate uplift, came to $2,650. The building allowed the Sunday move. The economics didn't.

The Sunday Sydney problem

We covered Sydney's weekend move bans in apartments in detail — many strata schemes flat-out prohibit Saturday or Sunday moves, particularly in older eastern-suburbs blocks and inner-city CBD towers. But a substantial number of buildings do allow Sunday moves. The trap is assuming permission and affordability are the same thing.

The truth: even when the building allows it, Sunday is the most expensive moving day of the week in Sydney. The premium isn't a single line item. It's three or four small ones that compound. By the time you've totaled them, a $1,400 Saturday move becomes a $2,500 Sunday move. Same job. Same load. Same building. Same crew. Different day.

This article unpacks the surcharge maths, names the specific cost components, and explains why even when buildings green-light Sunday moves, your wallet votes against them.

The four surcharges that stack

Sunday moves cost more for four separate reasons. Each on its own is manageable. Together they double the bill.

01

Penalty wages on the crew

Industry-wide
+25–30% hourly rate

Removalist crew wages are governed by the Road Transport and Distribution Award and similar instruments. Sunday work attracts substantial penalty rates — typically 75% above weekday base, with public holidays at 150% above. Fair Work Ombudsman publishes the standard penalty rate framework that flows into nearly every removal contract.

That cost has to be passed somewhere. Sydney removalists who run a transparent operation will quote the Sunday hourly rate directly, usually $20-50 more per hour than a Tuesday. A typical 2-bedroom move that takes five hours therefore runs $100-250 more on a Sunday before any other variable kicks in.

02

Lift booking premiums

Apartment moves only
$150–$300 above weekday

Most Sydney towers that allow Sunday moves charge a premium for weekend lift bookings. A weekday goods-lift booking might be $50-100; the Sunday equivalent often sits at $200-400. The reason is simple: building staff are on penalty rates too, and someone has to be on-site to oversee the booking and confirm the lift padding goes in.

If your lift booking includes a building manager standing by to handle access, you're paying for their Sunday wages whether the booking documentation says so or not.

03

Building manager call-out fees

Tier 1–2 buildings
$100–$250 flat

A handful of larger Sydney strata schemes — Bondi Junction high-rises, Chatswood towers, Pyrmont apartments, parts of the Eastern Suburbs — have explicit Sunday call-out fees in their by-laws. The fee covers a building manager attending site to grant access, which on weekends is otherwise outside their working hours.

Ask your strata manager (or check the OC certificate / by-law schedule if you're a buyer) whether a Sunday call-out fee applies. The number is invariably hidden until move-in and only shows up on the final lift-bond reconciliation.

04

Slower jobs because everyone else is on Sunday too

Knock-on effect
+30–60 minutes typical

Because Sunday is one of the few days some buildings allow moves, the buildings that do allow them are full of moves on Sundays. Goods lifts get queued. Loading bays get congested. Crews wait for access slots. A job that runs four hours on a Tuesday routinely runs five on a Sunday for no reason except shared infrastructure.

That's an extra hour of the (already-elevated) Sunday hourly rate. The compounding effect is what produces the headline doubling.

"Customers tell us they 'have to' move on Sunday because settlement is Friday. We always reply: a Tuesday or Wednesday next week is usually cheaper than the Sunday surcharge maths even after you factor in three nights' accommodation."

The maths on a real Sydney 2-bedder

Take a typical Eastern Suburbs 2-bedroom apartment move. Same job, two different days.

Tuesday: 5 hours × $180/hour = $900. Lift booking $80. Total: $980.

Sunday (same building, same crew): 6 hours (lift queue) × $220/hour = $1,320. Lift booking $250. Building manager Sunday call-out $180. Total: $1,750.

That's a $770 difference, or 78%, for the same physical work. We've reproduced this comparison hundreds of times across hundreds of buildings. The numbers vary in detail. The conclusion doesn't.

Buildings that genuinely allow Sunday moves (and the conditions)

Here's what the building landscape looks like in 2026. Generalisations, not absolutes — every building's by-laws are individual, and the only authoritative source is your strata manager.

Most flexible: Inner West townhouse complexes (Glebe, Newtown, Marrickville), smaller Tier 3-5 strata schemes without lifts, post-2010 build apartments in Pyrmont and Zetland that have dedicated removal lifts. These often allow Sunday moves with minimal premium because there's no concierge to call out, no Sunday wages.

Conditional: Most North Shore apartments, Surry Hills and Darlinghurst boutique blocks, newer Eastern Suburbs builds. Sunday is usually allowed but with a higher bond, restricted hours (often 9am-3pm only), and the surcharge stack described above.

Generally banned: Heritage Eastern Suburbs blocks (Bondi, Coogee, Bronte older builds), CBD towers with full-time concierge teams, Mosman and Cremorne older apartments, anywhere with by-laws that pre-date the Strata Schemes Management Act 2015 and haven't been updated. Buying or renting? Check the by-laws.

When a Sunday move actually makes sense

It's not always wrong. Sunday moves can be the right call when:

Settlement is Friday and the buyer needs immediate occupancy. Three nights in a hotel for a family of four costs $600-1,000 in Sydney. If the Sunday surcharge is also $600-1,000, the hotel is the better deal in dollars but the Sunday move is the better deal in stress. People reasonably trade money for time.

Your weekday job has zero flexibility. Some lawyers, surgeons, anyone in court or on call, simply cannot take a weekday off. Sunday is the only option. The surcharge is the cost of having an inflexible weekday.

The building genuinely doesn't allow weekday moves. Rare but it happens — a handful of CBD office conversions only allow residential moves on Sundays because the loading dock is dedicated to commercial freight Monday to Friday.

Outside those scenarios, a Tuesday or Wednesday move two weeks later almost always wins.

How to actually save money on a Sydney move

The cheapest Sydney moving days, in order: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Monday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Mid-month and mid-week beats end-of-month on weekends every time. End-of-financial-year (late June) and the lead-up to Christmas are the most expensive weeks of the year.

Booking 3-5 weeks ahead gives you access to the Tuesday-Wednesday inventory. Booking 7 days out forces you into Saturday-Sunday because the better days are gone. The earlier you book, the more leverage you have on price.

If your timeline is fixed and Sunday is the only option, ask your removalist for their Sunday-specific quote rather than assuming it's just the weekday rate plus 10%. Compare that against the cost of three nights' accommodation and decide deliberately. You'll be surprised how often the answer is "I'll take the hotel and move Tuesday."

Avoid the Sunday surcharge stack

Get a transparent quote that names the day-of-week pricing upfront, not buried in fine print. We'll tell you the Tuesday number and the Sunday number side by side.

Get my Sydney quote

The bottom line

Sunday Sydney moves cost roughly double a Tuesday equivalent in the same building. The premium isn't visible in any one quote line — it's the cumulative effect of penalty wages, lift premiums, building manager fees, and slower job throughput.

If your timeline is genuinely flexible, move on a Tuesday or Wednesday and pocket the difference. If it isn't, get the surcharge stack quoted in writing before move day, not as a surprise on the final invoice. The buildings that allow Sunday moves are real. The savings of choosing Sunday usually aren't.
