What "professional movers" should actually mean

Anyone can call themselves professional movers. The phrase costs nothing to put on a website, and Melbourne has hundreds of operators using it — from AFRA-accredited removal companies to a person with a hired truck and a Facebook page. The difference only shows up when something goes wrong: a scratched stone benchtop, a crew that doesn't turn up, an invoice twice the quote.

At Easy Peasy, professional is something you can verify. We're AFRA accredited and audited every year on insurance, vehicles, training and complaints handling. Every crew member is employed, trained and police-checked — not a day labourer picked up that morning. Public liability insurance is current, and we issue a Certificate of Currency for any building manager who asks. Our hourly rates are published, and the invoice is calculated by the minute from those rates.

We've moved more than 25,000 households and businesses out of our Cheltenham depot since 2019, with a 4.9★ average across 1,190+ Google reviews. Below: what's included, what it costs, how a move with us runs, and the checklist we'd use to vet any Melbourne mover — including us.

Why us

Six things that make a Melbourne mover professional

Each of these is something you can check before booking — not a promise you have to take on trust.

AFRA accredited

Externally audited every year by the Australian Furniture Removers Association on insurance, vehicles, training and complaints handling.

Employed, police-checked crews

Our removalists are employed and trained in-house. Nobody is subcontracted on the morning of your move.

Insured on every job

Current public liability cover, with a Certificate of Currency issued as standard for apartment buildings and body corporates.

Billed by the minute

A 2-hour minimum, then every minute counted — no rounding up to the next half hour, no fuel levies added at the end.

Protection included

Blanket wrapping, floor runners, corner guards and door-jamb protectors come standard. No surcharge for looking after your home.

Our own storage depot

Secure storage at our Cheltenham depot, so a settlement gap doesn't mean handing your furniture to a second company.

Professional movers vs cash-only operators

The cheapest quote on Marketplace often stops being cheap the moment something breaks. Here's what you're actually comparing.

Easy Peasy professional movers Typical cash-only operator
Accreditation AFRA accredited, audited yearly None — no external oversight
Crew Employed, trained, police-checked Casual labour, often found the same morning
Insurance Public liability, Certificate of Currency on request Usually none — damage is your loss
Pricing Published hourly rates, billed by the minute "Cash price" quoted by phone, open to change
Invoice GST tax invoice for every job Cash, no paperwork
Furniture protection Blankets, runners, corner guards included Extra, or not available
If something goes wrong Documented complaints process + AFRA escalation A phone that may stop answering

Planning guide

How long a professional Melbourne move usually takes

Typical figures from our own Melbourne jobs, for a local move of under 20km with reasonable access. Stairs, long carries and lift bookings add time.

PropertyUsual truckCrewTypical duration

Studio or 1-bedroom apartment 4T 2 2–4 hours
2-bedroom home or apartment 6T 2 3–5 hours

The process

How a professional move with us runs

The same sequence on every job, so nothing is left to whoever happens to turn up.

  1. Instant quote

Enter both addresses and your rooms in the calculator. You get the truck size, estimated hours and total in about two minutes — no phone tag.

  2. Confirmation & planning

Our ops team confirms the date, arrival window, access notes, parking, lift bookings and anything needing special handling — pianos, pool tables, stone tops.

  3. Protection first

Floor runners, door-jamb protectors and corner guards go down before a single item moves. Furniture is blanket-wrapped and strapped in the truck.

  4. Load, move, place

Items go to the rooms you nominate, beds are reassembled, and the crew does a final walkthrough with you before leaving.

  5. Invoice by the minute

You pay for the actual time, at the published rate — with a GST tax invoice for your records or your employer's relocation claim.

How to check any Melbourne mover is genuinely professional

Use this before you book anyone, including us. A legitimate operator will answer every point without hesitation.

  • Look up their ABN on the Australian Business Register — check it's active and matches the business name
  • Ask if they're AFRA accredited, then confirm on the AFRA member directory
  • Ask for a Certificate of Currency for their public liability insurance
  • Get rates in writing — hourly rate, minimum hours, and how travel time is charged
  • Check whether crews are employed or subcontracted on the day
  • Confirm you'll get a GST tax invoice, not a cash-only deal
  • Look for a real depot address, not just a mobile number
  • Read recent Google reviews — volume and consistency matter more than a handful of 5-stars
Moving from an apartment? Most Melbourne buildings require a Certificate of Currency and a booked service lift before a truck is allowed on common property. Tell us the building when you book and we'll send the certificate straight to your building manager. See apartment movers Melbourne.
Common questions

Professional movers Melbourne — FAQs

How much do professional movers cost in Melbourne?

Our rates start at $160/hr for a 2T van or $180/hr for a 4T truck with two removalists, up to $290/hr for a 12T truck with a three-person crew. There's a 2-hour minimum, then billing is by the minute. A typical 3-bedroom Melbourne house move takes 4–6 hours. Use the instant quote calculator for an exact figure.

Are your movers employees or subcontractors?

Employees. Every removalist on an Easy Peasy truck is employed, trained in-house and police-checked. We don't subcontract crews on the day of your move.

Are you insured, and can you provide a Certificate of Currency?

Yes. We hold current public liability insurance and issue a Certificate of Currency as standard — just tell us who to send it to, such as your building manager or body corporate.

What does AFRA accreditation actually mean?

The Australian Furniture Removers Association audits accredited members every year on insurance, vehicles, staff training and complaints handling. It's an external check, not a badge you can buy. Read more on our AFRA accreditation page.

Is furniture protection included in the price?

Yes. Blanket wrapping, floor runners, corner guards and door-jamb protectors come standard on every move at no extra charge. Bed dismantling and reassembly is included too.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

Not for standard local Melbourne moves. Interstate moves need a 20% deposit at booking to lock in the truck, and storage requires the first week upfront.

How far ahead should I book Melbourne movers?

Two to three weeks is comfortable for most dates. Saturdays, month-ends and the end of financial year fill fastest, so book those earlier. We can often fit mid-week moves at shorter notice — check availability in the calculator.

Do you cover outer Melbourne, Geelong and the Mornington Peninsula?

Yes. We cover every Melbourne suburb from our Cheltenham depot, plus the Mornington Peninsula and the Geelong corridor. Longer distances simply add drive time at the same hourly rate.
