The NT's southern gateway city
Katherine is the Northern Territory's southern gateway — 320 km south of Darwin on the Stuart Highway, and directly on The Ghan rail line. The population is small (around 10,000) but the town is strategically significant: RAAF Base Tindal sits 15 km south and hosts Australia's F-35A Lightning II squadrons, which makes Katherine one of the ADF's major posting destinations. Katherine is also the service hub for a large cattle-pastoral region and for remote Indigenous communities.
